Elk County Catholic senior outside hitter Payton Newton has been named the inaugural District 9 Central League Most Valuable Player, earning the top individual honor in a vote conducted by the league’s head coaches following the 2025 volleyball season.
Newton was officially announced as the award winner on October 7 and was formally recognized on October 17 during the District 9 Central League Championship match held in DuBois, Pennsylvania, where DuBois High School captured the league title with a 3–0 sweep over DuBois Central Catholic.
The District 9 Central League, introduced for the 2025 season, features ten programs: Bradford, Brockway, DuBois, DuBois Central Catholic, Elk County Catholic, Johnsonburg, Kane, Punxsutawney, Ridgway, and St. Marys. The league was created to enhance competitive balance and recognize both team and individual excellence across the region.
A dominant six-rotation player, Newton was the cornerstone of the Lady Crusaders’ success this season. She led ECC in kills while also excelling in serve-receive and defense, showcasing her ability to impact every phase of the game. Her leadership, poise, and relentless work ethic helped guide ECC to one of the strongest records in District 9.
The MVP honor — decided by votes from the league’s head coaches — underscores Newton’s impact and the respect she earned from opponents across the district. Coaches cited her consistency, competitiveness, and ability to elevate those around her as key reasons for her selection.
ECC Head Coach Josh Burrs said Newton’s recognition reflects both her individual commitment and the standard she’s helped set for the program.
“Payton was a difference-maker all season,” Burrs said. “Her leadership, energy, and consistency were vital to our success, and this award shows how much she was respected across the league.”
Newton’s selection as the first District 9 Central League MVP is a well-deserved recognition of her effort and consistency throughout the season.
