Mrs. Daniele Yost’s Junior American Lit class began the year by studying the influence of Native American storytelling on American Literature. The class studied creation stories, trickster tales, and transformation myths. Students delved deeper into the meaning of symbols and how Native Americans conveyed their stories through oral traditions. Students compared and contrasted several tribes’ creation stories with the creation story from the Book of Genesis. They then created and illustrated their own Native American creation story. To end the week, students shared their original Native American stories with their classmates, passing on the tradition of oral storytelling.
