The three-year-old preschool classes at St. Marys Catholic Elementary School enjoyed a field trip to the Bucksgahuda & Western Railroad today!

The B&W started in 1966 when the Bauer brothers of St. Marys, PA, saw an advertisement in Trains magazine for a German-built steam locomotive and purchased it. They shipped the engine from Germany through Philadelphia to St. Marys.

Buxtehude, Germany, is the “Friendly Fairytale Capital of the World” and shares a unique link with the B&W railroad.  The founders, the Bauer Family, trace their roots back to this region of Germany. The ” Bucksgahuda ” fairy tale is a coming-of-age tale where children who refuse to “grow up” are transformed into trouser-wearing geese! Just like a fairytale, B&WRR Co. members never grow up either, still playing with their trains!

Bucksgahuda & Western Railroad Co. is a 501 (c) 3 charity organized for education. Their museum, based in St. Marys, PA, is a resource for education and preservation of railroad history.

The Bucksgahuda and Western Railroad Co. offers tours and rides by appointment only.
