In Mrs. Kate Ehrensberger’s Chemistry lab at Elk County Catholic High School, sophomores used various techniques to separate a mixture of iron filings, salt, and sand. The students used a magnet to pick up the iron, added water to allow the sand to be filtered, and then boiled the water using evaporation to recover the salt.
