Fourth-grade students at St. Marys Catholic Elementary School are shown in Mrs. Wendel’s music class during their Keyboarding Unit, which lasts several weeks and builds week to week. Each student will learn the notes on the staff, where the notes are located on the piano, and the correct hand positioning. Students will use these skills to learn small melodies that grow more challenging each week. Some of the pieces they are learning are “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Ode to Joy.”

The ability for each student to have their own keyboard helps the learning process tremendously. The keyboards were donated to the music program by Willis Meyer.

Playing the piano has been shown to relieve stress, split concentration, improve memory, learning, creativity, math, language skills, problem-solving abilities, and, most importantly, have fun!
