Over the past few weeks, the kindergarten class at St Leo School has been learning about Halloween customs and their connection to the Christian faith.
For example, the Irish used turnips to create their Jack O’Lanterns but switched to pumpkins when they came to America. Some believe sticking a candle in a pumpkin would scare away the evil spirits the night before All Saints’ Day.
Mr. Slattery reminded students every time they see a Jack O’Lantern this Autumn that it represents the light of Jesus in the world. They finished their unit on Halloween by reading “The Monster at the End of The Book” and creating Jack O-Lantern headbands to remember that they carry the light of Jesus wherever they go.
