Recently 5th grade students at St. Marys Catholic Elementary School participated in Arbor Day activities held at Benzinger Park.

Students assisted planting a tree with the City of St. Marys Shade Tree Commision. Toby Herzing, Forestry Consultant from the DCNR and Master of Ceremonies explained to the class the mission of the Shade Tree Commission.

In 2005 the Shade Tree Commission started an educational program with the 4th grade students in the City. An ISA Certified Arborist from The Pennsylvania State University gives a presentation on trees to these students. This project continues each year. 4th Grade students in the City are given a tree seedling to take home to plant. There is a follow-up in 5th Grade about the tree survival.

Thank you to the Shade Tree Commission for helping keep our city and parks beautiful! A special thanks to co-sponsor First Energy, and West Creek Nursery for the supplies and helping the students plant the trees.
