Recently ECCSS hosted Dr. Michael Krom, professor of philosophy at St. Vincent College, who brought eight university honor students with him to experience St. Leo School’s Classical Curriculum in action. During Dr. Krom’s time in Elk County he also visited Elk County Catholic High School to participate in ECC’s AP Literature and AP Language/Composition courses.

The college students are enrolled in St. Vincent’s Benedictine Leadership Studies Program, which was recently named the best program in the country for Mission Integration by the Association for Student Affairs at Catholic Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Krom had particular praise for St. Leo School’s work in literature and language arts, and suggested that St Leo School should serve as inspiration for Catholic schools across the country.

While visiting Elk County Catholic High School Dr. Krom and his students came to study how ECC English teacher Grace Messineo successfully combines strong faith formation, academic rigor and Socratic discussion into her classroom. After a recitation of St. Thomas Aquinas’s Five Proofs, the students discussed Tale of Two Cities in AP Lit, and assisted AP Lang students in developing the essays they are writing about the important role military veterans play in American society.
