Mrs. Gresco’s 4th grade class at St. Leo Catholic School learned that every catapult needs 3 components- an arm to hurl the material, an elastic component to store energy, and a base to hold the catapult in place.
Students released their catapult made of a spoon, their own hand, and a marshmallow to observe what would happen. The marshmallow took flight as the potential energy was transferred into kinetic energy of motion. Variations included adjusting the angle of the spoon and the amount of force used to pull back on the spoon.
