Earlier this spring, as part of their Lenten service project, the fifth-grade classes at St. Marys Catholic Elementary collected items for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. This collection was conducted in conjunction with the students’ Religion lesson on the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. They had been exploring ways to help those who are sick and in need of support, and they decided to take action.
The items that were collected included new and gently used books, board games, and DVDs as well as batteries for electronic games. These items provide a valuable distraction to patients and their families during their time at the hospital. In the end, the students’ efforts boasted over 500 items, a 10-lb. chocolate Easter bunny (donated by Fr. Jeff), and enough money to purchase 15 meal tickets for families in need.
What a perfect service project – kids helping kids! Way to go!
